Vice Minister Ma Meets Canadian Minister of International Trade

Vice Minister Ma Xiuhong met with David Emerson, Canadian Minister of International Trade, who is visiting China on invitation, in Beijing on May 22. The two sides exchanged views on the issues of common concern, including deepening the bilateral trade and economic ties, strengthening the cooperation in infrastructure, promoting the development of bilateral trade and investment, etc.

Ma expressed that China-Canada economic and trade cooperation has enjoyed collectively smooth development. The bilateral trade volume had reached US$ 30.4 billion in 2007, realizing in advance the goal set by the leaders of the two countries of reaching or surpassing US$ 30 billion by 2010. The actual investment by Canadian enterprises totaled nearly US$ 6 billion, while the direct investment by Chinese enterprises in Canada reached US$ 3.6 billion. Therefore, China and Canada have become each other’s important trade and investment partner.

Ma stressed that the two countries have wide common interests and strong mutual economic complementarity, and the two sides should further tap the potentials of economic and trade cooperation. The Chinese government supports the enterprises of the two countries to strengthen their cooperation in the various sectors including infrastructure. Meanwhile, the two sides should enhance exchanges and dialogues to promote healthy development in the two-way trade and investment.

Emerson agreed with Ma, positively appraised the development of China-Canada trade and economic ties, and expected the two sides to press on with the negotiation on bilateral investment protection agreement. He also extended his sympathy and condolences to China over the massive earthquake occurred in Wenchuan, highly praised the rescue and relief efforts taken by the Chinese government and people. He expressed that the Canadian government and people are actively donating funds to the quake-hit areas, and believed that the Chinese government and people shall eventually overcome the massive disaster.

After the meeting, Ma and Emerson jointly signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada on the Cooperation of the Infrastructure Construction and Development.
