Minister Chen Holds Talks with U.S. Trade Representative

On the morning of March 20, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming met with the visiting U.S. Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab in Beijing. The two sides thoroughly exchanged views on promoting the WTO Doha Round Talks and China-US bilateral trade and economic ties.

Minister Chen expressed that the successful conclusion of the Doha Round Talks is conducive to maintaining the multilateral trading system, containing trading protectionism, and building confidence of all countries in the multilateral trading system and global economy. China and the United States share the common position on promoting the Doha Round Talks to reach an early successful conclusion. China is willing to work with the rest of the WTO members, including the US, through mutual coordination and concerted efforts, to bring into full play the due role of new economies in their power and promote the Doha Talks to reach a successful conclusion.

Chen stressed that the US is the world’s largest country in terms of economic aggregate and trade is a major driving force for its economic growth, and therefore, it shall take the lead in displaying its flexibility at the moment of truth during the talks by taking a key step towards the domestic support for agriculture, which can help to break the current deadlock of the Doha Talks.

Schwab expressed that it is the primary task for the Bush Administration to promote the Doha Round Talks to reach a successful conclusion, and that the US is willing to make contributions during the talks, and all other sides are expected to create new trade flow on the main topics; China, as an important stakeholder, shall play a bigger leading role; China’s success is in conformity with the interests of the US, and promoting the Doha Talks to reach a successful conclusion is the common aspiration shared by both the US and China; the two countries shall intensify their exchanges and cooperation on the various topics of the Doha Round Talks so as to jointly promote the course of the talks.
